We are a multi-cultural community of believers from various faith backgrounds, who strive to follow Christ in the way of service and peace. We take Christ’s message of love and healing to our workplace and our community. In addition to weekly worship and Sunday School Education, we learn to know each other through fellowship meals, small group activities, and twice annual weekend retreats. As lifelong learners, our Sunday School Education time provides an opportunity for us to learn about about ourselves, our community of faith, Bible scripture, God and the world. Adults choose between a Bible study or topical electives, which have included book studies on parenting, marriage, prayer and planning for retirement, living more with less , compassionate living, etc. Youth classes are offered for children two years of age through teenagers each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. in the education wing of the church. Children participate in singing, learning Bible stories, creating art and other participatory activities designed to help them learn about God’s love and and Christ’s message of peace, healing and hope. The curriculum “Gather Round”, published by the Mennonite Church, lays a solid foundation in Bible literacy, and helps to lead children into a relationship with God. The Nursery is staffed by volunteers from our congregation. It provides care and playtime for children three years and younger during the 11 a.m. worship services. It is a warm and caring place, with age appropriate toys, books and spaces for a changing table, and for taking a nap. The Nursery is also available for children younger than two during the 9:30 to 10:30 Sunday school time. We live our Christian life along side each other, not in isolation. Small groups provide a setting to develop deeper relationship with each other than can be normally formed by solely attending Sunday morning worship services. Once a new person or family has been attending First Mennonite several times, a church Elder tries to help recommend and facilitate an appropriate small group. This placement will be based on how closely the small group activities can meet the interests and time availability of each prospective participant. Usually the small groups consist of between 6-12 adults, and sometimes, their children. Once the groups get larger than this number, members are encouraged to divide and form new groups. The activities are different for each group, and they meet in various parts of town, for activities including, Bible study, prayer, sharing, meals recreation. Many small groups also plan and participate in church or independently planned community service projects. See Outreach Tab. High School students meet for fellowship and service. A bi-annual trip to a national Mennonite Convention gives the youth an opportunity to meet other Mennonite youth from across the nation, as they explore what it means to be a follower of Christ. On alternate summers, youth participate in an urban service project, learning to live and show Christ's love in the world. Menno-mites, a group of youth from ages 7 through 12, also meet for monthly fun, educational and community service projects. In the recent past they have raised money for a mission trip to Haiti, created a quilt and assembled school kits to be distributed to needy persons by the worldwide Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). On the first Wednesday evening of each month , the congregation meets for fellowship and to enjoy a healthy and tasty meal, prepared by church volunteers. We celebrate a variety of cultures in our congregation, each having having its own unique food offerings. On special occasions, ethnic meals prepared may be served by our multi-cultural members , including Chinese, Thai, Spanish and Palestinian cuisines. |
